DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – As the cooler fall air creeps into the Miami Valley, a local group is ready to wrap up those in need.

Dozens of volunteers gathered at Warped Wing in Downtown Dayton to make blankets to give away.

This is the third year they’ve held the blanket-making party.

Last year, they exceeded their goal of 500 blankets.

Organizers say it’s a rewarding way to give back.

“When we’ve given the blankets to people in our community, we’ve had them come back and thank us so it’s really a very personal project for us and it’s great to just be there to help our community as a community,” said Jeremy Lewis, assistant director of operations.

The finished blankets will be donated to area homeless shelters and Dayton Children’s Hospital.

Dayton Daily News: DHS Blanket Project Donates to Teen Moms

Here is an excerpt from the Dayton Daily News that mentions our Blanket Program and its partnership with Dixie High School:

Dixie High School Blanket Project

Several years ago, Dixie High School decided to devote 10 minutes out of each day to a Mentor Period, where each teacher was assigned a small group of students. During the school year, each class uses coach John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success to discuss various characteristics that lead to productive lives. Teachers also monitor students’ grades, provide organizational tips, and serve as a mentor for students.

Two years ago, the students in each mentor class were encouraged to develop a community service project. Mentees of Mrs. Laurie Moses brainstormed and finally decided to make “no-sew” baby blankets. They invited Mrs. MeLeah Perry’s mentees to join them and together the two classes made 15 blankets that were donated to the YWCA’s teenage mother program.

This year students from five mentor periods — Mrs. Moses, Mrs. Lansdale, Mrs. Ledford-Jones, Mr. Vince, and Mrs. Blevins — joined together to make the blankets. The students mounted a fundraising effort to help pay for the fabric to make the blankets and they were having trouble reaching their goal. Luckily, it was discovered that Top of the Market, a banquet facility in downtown Dayton, sponsors its own blanket party each year. Mrs. Moses contacted Jeremy Lewis at Top of the Market and a partnership was formed. Top of the Market provided the fabric and the students at Dixie High School provided the blanket makers.

Next year the goal is to have the entire high school participate in this project. If you would like to help sponsor this activity, please contact Mrs. Moses at (937) 687-1366 ext. 426 or email her at lmoses@newlebanonschools.org.

2014 Blanket Party Wrap-Up

Good afternoon everyone!

We hosted our second Blanket Party last night – and it was a huge success!  All said and done between both parties and outside donations, we made 504 blankets to donate to our community this year!

Everyone here at The Deli and Top of the Market would like to thank everyone involved with this project over the last few months.  The donations of your time and effort are greatly appreciated by us here, and we know that those in our community that need and receive these blankets will appreciate everything that you have done for them.

We would like to say a special thank you to a few groups:

  • Ali Sowers and The Good Samaritans – they brought in around 75 blankets before the party even started and gave us a great headstart!
  • The University of Dayton Women’s Basketball Team for taking time out of their busy schedules to stop by and make some blankets!
  • Dixie High School for getting students together as an after-school program to make blankets!
  • Party Pleasers for DJing the event!
  • Liftoff Entertainment for bringing the graffiti wall photo booth!

We have a lot of new ideas for next year – and we hope to make this program bigger and better each year.  In the mean time, check out some pictures from last night’s event and we look forward to seeing you next year!

St. Vincent de Paul Blanket Donation

Good afternoon everyone!

Yesterday we here at The Deli and Top of the Market had the pleasure to take 75 blankets that were made at our October Blanket Party to St. Vincent de Paul.

Rebecca Delong gave us a tour of the Gateway Shelter for Women and Familes and gave us some eye-opening information.  St. Vincent de Paul provides 130,000 nights of shelter annually and provides 1,000 meals per day to the homeless in our community.

We encourage everyone to explore the volunteer opportunities available at St. Vincent de Paul (http://stvincentdayton.org/get-involved/volunteer-positions/) and if you would like to make a donation directly to the program, please visit https://stvincentdayton.org/donation-options/.

We would like to give special thanks to Jim Bucher and Jeff Klaene for filming the donation and putting together a video for us!

We would also like to give special thanks to Rebecca Delong and David Bohardt from St. Vincent de Paul for showing us around and giving us some insight into how big this issue is in our community.

If you would like to be a part of our Blanket Program, please email Jeremy Lewis at jeremy@topofmarket.com for information on how you can become involved.

Again, a huge thank you to everyone involved with this program!
